I found volume 41 really hard to summarize for two reasons - because the flashback breaks my heart (so I had to keep stopping every few chapters), and because I find just about everything that happens so compelling, it was more like I was translating than summarizing half the time. Which is overkill and unnecessary, really. But anyway, I'm hoping that the next couple of volumes might be easier to summarize. Fight scenes usually are.

Volume 41: Delcaration of War )
sara_tanaquil: (bad kanji)
I already did my chunk of academic writing today (dear god, I have no idea if any of this is any good), which means I get to kick back for a little while.

Blah blah blah, I like using tech tools to learn Japanese )
sara_tanaquil: (mischief_managed)
I am officially declaring Volume 41 to be the hardest to summarize after 35. I love so many things about it, but, DAMN.

In the meantime --

Volume 40: Gear )
sara_tanaquil: (Kanji make me cry)
I'm gearing up to do more scholarly writing today, which of course means that I start out procrastinating over my first cup of coffee.

I have a random question for my Japanese sensei(s) (knowledge of One Piece is optional - grammar is the main thing here).

Cut to spare people's eyes from scary long sentence structure )

Any help with this grammatical puzzle is welcome! And now it's time to get some real work done.
sara_tanaquil: (stealth mode)
Finally, things are looking up! (I haven't started 40 yet... gotta get on that. But 41 is making me cry too much. ;_;)

Volume 39: Contest/Struggle )
sara_tanaquil: (stealth mode)
This might be a little premature, because I'm not sure if [livejournal.com profile] mangaroo has had a chance to read 37 yet, but having finished a draft of 39, I'm starting to lose track of where I am. So, here is 38 for all my Monday morning commenters.

Volume 38: Rocketman )
sara_tanaquil: (shipofdreams)
I am PRAYING that [livejournal.com profile] mangaroo gets Volume 39 real soon. Come on, library gods!

Volume 37: Tom )
sara_tanaquil: (spoilers)
I really think anything I could possibly say about this volume would be a spoiler.

Volume 36: Justice Number 9 )
sara_tanaquil: (shipofdreams)
I was going to put off posting this a little longer, but since [livejournal.com profile] mangaroo might have to take books back to the library soon, I decided to go ahead.

I was SO excited to start Water 7 in the last volume. And don't get me wrong, Water 7 is awesome, no question. But I forgot one tiny detail, because I practice selective memory for the WIN: doing Water 7 meant I had to do Volume 35.

Volume 35 HURTS. Hurts like having bamboo splints stuck under your fingers and twisted. For hours.

Oda, you sick piece of work, I f&*ing hate you right now.

I'll try to keep this short, because HURTS. Need to get to the next volume, fast!

Volume 35: Captain )
sara_tanaquil: (spoilers)
I have a million things I want to be posting about (and I am hoping to get to some of them tomorrow), but I feel like I just need to get this off my chest first, because I can't put it into a more general post where people might get spoiled.

The following contains serious spoilers for the latest chapters of One Piece in Shounen Jump (specifically, chapters 731-736, including chapters from Dec. 16 to Feb. 3 - inspired principally by having read ch. 736 last night).

OMG OMG OMG )

It kind of kills me not to be reading first in Japanese (there is so much that even the best translation can't capture), but at times like this it's worth the sacrifice.

Incidentally, for anyone who is wondering how I keep up with the latest chapters but doesn't want to click on spoilers - besides buying Japanese volumes when they come out, I subscribe to Viz Manga's online subscription to Shounen Jump Alpha, which, as of relatively recently, is fully simultaneous with releases in Japan (the magazine in Japan and the matching Shounen Jump Alpha chapter both come out on Mondays). Also, chapters no longer expire after a year is up; you get to keep them forever (on your ipad or for viewing and re-downloading online), just like magazines piled up in the closet from the old paper days.
sara_tanaquil: (shipofdreams)
YAY, just a last little bit of Foxy and we can get to the good stuff!

Water 7/Enies Lobby: best arc ever or best arc ever? (To be honest, it's awfully hard to choose. Alabasta and Marineford are in the running, but Water 7 is way up there.)

Volume 34: The City of Water, Water 7 )
sara_tanaquil: (chopper_zoro)
Not sure when [livejournal.com profile] mangaroo expects to have this in hand, but I’m going to try to hustle through it, because I find this (mercifully short) arc so painfully dull and unfunny. [livejournal.com profile] wrenwyn thought the anime version of it was hilarious, though, so… I hope someone finds something worth enjoying in it.

Volume 33: Davy Back Fight )
sara_tanaquil: (luffy_owls)
So, some One Piece discussions while we were in Japan inspired me to try to tackle the One Piece summaries again.

There is some awesome stuff in the very end of the Skypiea arc... if I could remember anything that happened in Skypiea at this point. And then the beginning of the Davy Back Fight, oh god. Let's see how fast I can get through vol 33. [livejournal.com profile] mangaroo, I really hope you find the Davy Back Fight arc more entertaining than I do. At least it's short.

I need to figure out the best way to do these. This one I already had some past notes written up for, at least for the first chapter or two, so I kept it in the same style, with fairly detailed summaries. I don't know if that is the best way to do it, though. It's time consuming, and after all, anyone reading the volume in English doesn't actually need me to summarize it. Maybe I can figure out how to just call out the bits that I think are interesting or funny.

Anyway, this one is traditionally long-style. 出発する!

More icons

Five requested by [livejournal.com profile] gnine!

Oh, man, I swear there was some sort of backstory to this, but now I can't track it down. I looked through my entire series of 2005 journal entries (because I know I picked it up sometime during that year), but to no avail. I thought the lettering on it had been done by [livejournal.com profile] spacealien_vamp, like so many of my icons, but since I didn't credit her on my icon page, maybe I'm misremembering? Anyway, I adore this icon, and it so often sums up all my feelings about Japanese. No cookie for you, Japanese! For anyone who doesn't know, the character means "bad."

Kimi ni Todoke! (That's Kazehaya being adorable, as Kazehaya always is.) Oh, you must watch the anime and/or read the manga if you don't know about this lovely shoujo series. The anime is complete; the manga is still running, though I think it's nearing an end - I just picked up vol. 20 in Japan. My favorite icon when encouragement is needed (either for someone else or for myself).

Ahaha, the finale to season 2 of Chuck! I actually can't remember all the details of the climax (way overdue for a re-watch), but it's a wedding (Chuck's sister) that goes hideously, horribly wrong when Chuck's secret spy life somehow intersects with Chuck's dorky BuyMore colleagues who were recruited to perform at the wedding in their dreadful amateur band. I wish I could find more opportunities to use this icon.

One of my several Odoru icons, all by the talented [livejournal.com profile] spacealien_vamp. I don't get to reference Odoru often enough (and how often otherwise does one want to post about stalking or strip shows?), but I've been on an Odoru rewatch kick just lately, as part of my campaign to do more listening practice. Just such a fun TV series.

One of [livejournal.com profile] spacealien_vamp's best. From the halcyon [livejournal.com profile] g_defend community days. I'm always on the lookout for a chance to use it, and sometimes I even find one. I love Ishikawa's clueless face.

Have been back from Japan just over a week, am back in CT trying to console three resentful abandoned cats, and slowly recovering from the usual jet lag from hell. I owe all kinds of catch-up posts, including a trip report, but in the meantime, have a meme from [livejournal.com profile] firesign10:

1. Reply to this post and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Five chosen by [livejournal.com profile] firesign10 (who cleverly managed to pick all the ones I never get to use, so now I can talk about why I have them in the first place):

Scanned from a volume of Ryuu no Yuigon, a sadly underappreciated manga, because I thought the picture of the mushi freaking out was hilarious. It's a dragon story from a fantasy universe, and the mushi are little... random cute pet-critters, which I think I once described as a rabbit crossed with a marshmallow. One of two icons I use to express SHOCK!

From One Piece, as are approximately half my icons. Luffy as a little kid refusing to listen to... something, I don't remember what. I wish I had more opportunities to use this, but how often do you want to comment with an icon that says "lalala not listening"?

I love this cartoon-icon of chibi John and Rodney from Stargate Atlantis which I snagged from fellow SGA fan [livejournal.com profile] pentapus, and it makes me sad that I hardly ever have reason to use it any more. It just captures their personalities so beautifully - John goofing around, and Rodney, oh-so-serious.

One Piece again - Luffy chewing on Jinbei because he's mad about something. A monument to failed html! The story behind this one was, I wanted to make an animated gif icon from an absolutely hilarious animated gif a fellow fan created, but I never managed to make the animation work, and just left it as a single image, which I rarely have reason to use. It makes me smile every time I look at it, though, since I can just hear Jinbei roaring "I'm not fish food, Luffy!"

I used to be able to use this a lot more back when I was doing Fujimi summaries (ignore the adult content warning, I should really disable that since the site is about as offensive as sparkle ponies). It's a scan from the cover of one of the drama CDs, showing Kei and Yuuki as stuffed animals (a dog and a rabbit - Yuuki is the rabbit) kissing. I love Fujimi, you guys.

In other news: less than a week before I leave CT on my way to DC on my way to Japan. *panic*
sara_tanaquil: (Kemurin)
Since I had a bit of extra time today, I tried to organize my thoughts in writing on all the things I've read in the last few days. As so often, it turned into a monster post (HOW do you guys manage to review things so succinctly?). So, out of pity on the reader, I think I'm going to break it up into several posts over the next few days. (Bonus: I get credit for posting regularly without having to find the time to write up thoughts every day!)

Let's start with two volumes that I managed to read in Japanese, and one series that I finally got caught up on in English.

Morimoto Shuu, G-Defend 37 )

Fujisaki Kou, Torawareta Amai Kemonotachi )

Sakuragi Yaya, Yume Musubi, Koi Musubi (4 vols) )
sara_tanaquil: (Morning already?)
I just wanted to apologize for not having been around on LJ lately. I really want to get back to the One Piece posts! But besides getting adjusted back to life post-sabbatical (which is going busily, but well), the main reason I haven't been around is that I've been getting physical therapy since August for persistent pain in my left arm. Apparently it's a severely irritated rotator cuff, caused by computer over-use (what, I'm not supposed to be on the laptop 24/7?). I can still type short posts, obviously, but long typing sessions were making the problem much worse, so for the last month I've been trying to avoid computer use and amusing myself in other ways.

Since reading One Piece made me feel guilty for not doing posts, I've been reading a lot of Detective Conan. (I don't know, somehow the dumb detective stories are just kind of soothing?) Also catching up on a lot of anime, both vintage and recent - but more on that some other time.

Kitties are well and tearing my house to shreds in an excess of kitten energy. Oh god. I may never have an upright trash can ever again.

Physical therapy is showing improvement, so I hope to be around more soon!
sara_tanaquil: (shipofdreams)
Damn you, Oda, this is stealth heartbreak. Skypiea is all dial technology blah blah, Enel boring boring, fight fight yawn fight, all of a sudden FLASHBACK CRYYYYYYY. I call foul!

Actually I love this volume a lot. Light the flame of Shandora!

Also, Luffy, feel free to kill Enel ANY DAY NOW.

Volume 31 )
sara_tanaquil: (shipofdreams)
It kind of feels like the main function of this volume is to move all the pieces into place for the climax. (But I do love the climax itself! Coming up, volumes 31 and 32.)

Volume 30 )
