I read this really interesting study a while ago (can't remember where) about how Japanese people read manga more efficiently than we do in the US. The study somehow tracked the path of the eye on the page, and Americans would jump to spot of text and stop, and then jump to the next spot, etc. Japanese readers' eyes would just sort of slalom down the page. I'm not sure which method would absorb the material better, but it was interesting, anyway.
