I agree 100% with everything you say about Crocodile's hateability, which is why I was really surprised to find myself glimpsing all sorts of almost-sympathetic moments in him this time around. I didn't expect that at all. And certainly, no amount of past trauma would justify the crap he's done. But I am now very interested to see what, if anything, Oda does with Crocodile in the future.

Hmm, interesting point about Smoker maybe wanting to hang around to gather intel (not only about the Strawhats, but about Crocodile and Miss All-Sunday -- did he previously know that Miss A-S and Crocodile were working together?). But he himself says he would have escaped if he could, and he doesn't generally lie.
