Days 6-8

Looks like I owe a catch-up post, eh? On the upside, am now happily ensconced at the beach (where the weather is lovely and warm, for the moment, and it would be even nicer if the weird chemical smell in the air would go away. Road work??).

These were all hard!

Most annoying anime character

Argh, I had so much trouble deciding on this one. I considered Rini from Sailor Moon (but apparently she's less annoying in the later episodes of the subbed version?) and Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi (but she has too many redeeming characteristics). I'll have to wimp out and agree with the choice I saw on another meme-er's list:

Seriously, Happosai was just not remotely amusing on any level. Ranma 1/2 deserves a better shout-out in this meme, as it was arguably the anime that launched a thousand obsessions (it was the first one I rented when I found a shop in CT that carried videotapes), but maybe another day.

Favorite anime couple

Hmm, I'm saving my real answer to this question for Day 22, so... if we're sticking with straight couples, a hard call but I think I have to go for

... even though I never completely finished watching the series, which is probably cheating. (I own the whole thing! I just haven't finished watching it!)

There were a lot of near-competitors, though. Yuusaku x Kyoko from Maison Ikkoku. Miroku x Sango from Inuyasha (I have a particular weakness for that pairing). Kyou x Tohru from Fruits Basket. And I have a feeling I've forgotten a number of other favorites.

Most epic scene

Probably not most epic in absolute terms, but in terms of the scene that grabbed me by the throat, I never get tired of the scene in Episode 11 of Rurouni Kenshin where all of Aoshi's villainous team members sacrifice their lives to save him. It just comes out of NOWHERE, and is so awesome.

I was amused by my student's nomination for the category, though (which I have not personally seen, as it happens):

Yay! Glad to hear that you're enjoying your beach =)

I have to tell the truth and say I've only seen one episode of Ranma - just not my thing :p NGE's Shinji takes that category for me - I just find him incredibly hateful.

My favorite anime couple is probably Eureka and Renton from Eureka 7 (that's subject to change depending on my mood though :p)

Most Epic Scene - the one you named is really good - love that moment. I would have a really hard time coming up with one, and moreover any of mine would be major spoilers for One Piece (and I really, really want everyone to see that spoiler free ;0) So, I'll take a bye on that^^

Hope the weather stays nice!

Ugh, good call on Happosai. I was going to say Chiaki (lol), because I honestly don't hate on a lot of characters, but I am really finding him annoying right now. Happosai is much worse, though.

even though I never completely finished watching the series

Eh, don't bother. IMO, the first four episodes of that series are perfect, and then it's all downhill from there.

Favorite couple changes a lot, but right now it's Kazehaya/Sawako, hands down. Though maybe that's cheating because it's partly based on the manga? Hmmm.

I love your student's nomination for epic scene. XD Mine would be this...spoilers for One Piece, I guess, though it won't make any sense if you don't know what's going on. (I mean, it doesn't make much sense anyway, but...)

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Mine would be this...

AND I'LL FORM THE HEAD! I almost didn't click on that for fear (?) of spoilers, but holy crap, that just cracked me up. Horrifying and awesome all at the same time But, guh, stop making me more aware of the fact that I'm utterly, awfully, terribly behind on OP (and can probably never catch up to at this rate). D:

(also, I totally had to repost this because I fixed what is always a typo for me, only it wasn't a typo this time and the joke was totally ruined. :P)

[identity profile] manga-crow.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I love that scene^^ Though what happens a little bit after was one of my thoughts for epic (Nightmare Luffy is OMG <3)

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, it's funny, after watching that scene, I was thinking how I totally didn't remember how that fight ended. Guess I need to go back and re-read that part. >.>

(If we are going for serious epic in OP, for me it would be the end of Alabasta, with the Xs on the arms. You know what I'm talking about, I'm sure. Makes me cry every time. ;_;)

[identity profile] sara-tanaquil.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, how did I not think of Kazehaya/Sawako? I think that anime hasn't been around quite long enough to make it into my permanent head canon, but I love it (and the manga) so much.

LOL, I'll try to avoid the One Piece spoilers. I am going to try to watch that, really.

[identity profile] mangaroo.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's up to 498 episodes, according to wikipopularculturedia. Are you really going to watch it? I'm thinking that's how I'll spend my retirement while I'm waiting for death to come.

[identity profile] manga-crow.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
NOOOO!! Don't let the length put you off! It's really not that bad when you get into it - and for the time starved, I actually wrote a guide a while back so you can skip all of the filler (though OP filler is relatively high quality)

Every one should at least watch the first 45 episodes - if you get through that and aren't in love - well, maybe it's not for you.

I hate sounding like some hyper-otaku, but with no exaggeration, I can say this anime saved my life. I kind of feel obligated to spread the love^^

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's about how much of the anime I got thru, I believe (I only stopped because that's just about all I had available to me at the time - why yes, I AM dating myself). I agree with your assessment. I'd been enjoying the show but wasn't *in love* and around I dunno, 30's-40's, it's like a switch went off, and some of the scenes were just wow. I love the friendship themes in SJ stuff, what can I say? (I did read well past that part in the manga before I had to stop that as well - separate issues - but I'm so so so far from current it's heartbreaking.)

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
A couple random observations:
1) I need to re-watch Kenshin. Not only do I not remember more than half of what everyone thinks is "the good part" I think I might actually LIKE that part now.
2) I love how, when asked for something like "most epic", there is almost no way to properly assign such a singular honor in a medium so full of epicness, and people usually just have to revert to the ridiculously dramatic or accidental hilarity. I mean, THE POTATO CHIP scene, for god's sake! (Brilliant and hilarious and so wrong!)

I'm saving my real answer to this question for Day 22

I'm not. Favorite anime couple: Hiro and Nowaki.

If you want a hetero couple, I kind of want to go semi-humor and pick Lina & Gourry (because those two totally deserve each other and the lifetime of adventure they'll share and they provide me with no frustration whatsoever) but for actual coupledom/romance I'm torn between Emma and William or Season 1 Suwako and Kazehaya. There's a special place in my heart for the tragic Rosette and Chrono from Chrono Crusade, though as well. If you put a gun to my head and made me chose, I guess I'd pick Suwako/Kazehaya for sheer d'awwwwness.

"Most epic" gives me a lot of trouble, probably the most for this whole list. Too many choices, and I can scarcely remember details of half my shows other than to remember they blew me away at some point. *sweat* (I don't even want to think about the backlog full of shows with no doubt incredibly epic scenes, either!) That said: going off the cuff, I do have an answer but it will spoil you if you really never finished Sailor Moon. If you want to skip the spoiler, feel free. The death of the sailor scouts at the end of season 5, particularly the Inners in episode 196 I think, where Galexia shoots them thru with light and their bodies fall to the floor - If I'm recalling the "right" death scene (there were so many, hurr), it was the one that just showed their shadows as they fell and died. Very powerful scene.

And most annoying? SO MANY POSSIBILITIES, same problem recalling them (thankfully?). Maybe I can think of something later.

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
ACK?! Are the spoiler tags showing for you? I put spoiler tags in 2 places in that comment and they showed in the preview, but they don't show up here in the post? (OMG, if I just spoiled anyone, I'M SORRY! Why don't the tags work?????)

[identity profile] spacealien-vamp.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Why don't the tags work?

It was determined that spoiler tags don't work in comments, only in the main entry.

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that explains why it didn't work for me a few months ago (which was the last time I tried it), either. I thought I'd just done the code wrong or something then... apparently not. Oh well. :(

[identity profile] sara-tanaquil.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough, the spoiler tags did show up correctly in the copies of your comments that were emailed to me.

No worries -- it's going to be hard to avoid spoilers throughout this discussion, and I generally forget spoilers for things I haven't seen long before I ever get around to actually seeing the original.

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they also showed up when I went to *reply* to the comment. Its so strange how it works -- maybe someone should submit a bug report to LJ.

[identity profile] spacealien-vamp.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Most annoying: Mokona. No question about it. I HATE that thing.

Favorite couple*: Chiaki and Maron from Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne. (Mainly because Chiaki rocks as a boyfriend.) Runner up is Seiji/Honey from Cutey Honey Flash. (They would have won if they had gotten married BEFORE having a daughter.)

Epic scene: I'm torn. I'm leaning toward the scene where Kenshin goes Battousai for the first time. However, the scene where Van first reveals his wings in Escaflowne is pretty good, too.

* I'm only considering those that are actual couples in canon. That's why Hajime/Matsuri doesn't make the list. They still haven't gone beyond holding hands.

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Van first reveals his wings in Escaflowne

Escaflowne had so many to chose from! That's a good one, though.

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm leaning toward the scene where Kenshin goes Battousai for the first time.

I thought of that, too. Definitely the most epic fight scene, anyway.

[identity profile] sara-tanaquil.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, both of those epic nominations are, well, epic. It's a pity that for every time I've rewatched the beginning of Escaflowne (I most often watch it when trying to get someone else hooked on it, which means I've seen the first two or three episodes at least ten times), I rarely get as far as that scene with Van's wings, and that is SO good. I think I've only seen the series all the way through once or twice; I'm bad about rewatching long series, it takes so much time.
