Days 10 & 11

Whoops, yesterday got away from me. Luckily these two are pretty easy (if unoriginal).

Favorite slice of life anime

It feels like cheating to mention an anime more than once, but it's hard to choose anything but Azumanga Daioh for slice of life. I'm not even sure what else I would count toward the genre. (Does it count if something belongs to another genre, like romance, but does a really good job of capturing the feel of everyday life? If so, I might name KareKano or the much MUCH less well known BL anime Lesson XX.)

Favorite mecha anime

And again with the cheating. Escaflowne, all the way. I really don't like mecha in general, but I loved how Escaflowne incorporated mecha into the fantasy genre. Cloaks! Dragons!

Oh, but thinking of a runner-up for mecha, this has the interesting quality of combining an answer to both 10 & 11. I saw the OVA series at a campus anime club, and it's more slice of life than robot battle, very sweet.

I don't think Escaflowne is cheating for mecha. It technically works, and it was going to be my pick as well. :P (And if someone won't let me have Esca, then it's Voltron! HAHA!)

Since I'm in the mood to discuss: What is slice of life anymore, really? I've heard EMMA called that, because it's a slow-paced and simple romance. But is it? I even see Harem shows, and almost every.single.shoujo series called this! And I think we fall into traps labeling shows that don't easily fall into genre categories, especially as markets change. For example, how "slice of life" and "moe" are becoming nearly synonymous. I can't think of too many shows I can call "slice of life" at this point that I actually WANT to see. I really like(d) the manga for ARIA but I confess I haven't felt much like watching the anime (yet). I remember having had mild amusement while reading parts of GA Design, Hidamari Sketch, and the like, but I don't think I'd get as much out of the anime as the fanbases for those shows seem to. (And whatever happened to calling something "drama"?)

So.... on my list of potentials, if indeed they fit the category: Azumanga Daioh, Chi's Sweet Home, EMMA, Super Gals, and maybe even Antique Bakery (even though I never watched the last episode). Azumanga Daioh is such an easy choice (not knocking you!), because it has everything it should to be called this, and is an all around great show to boot....but I think I'm actually going to go with Super Gals instead. [Unless it doesn't count as Slice of Life, in which case never mind, it's AzuDa, orz.]

Wow, I would never think to call Emma "slice of life." Is the anime that different from the manga? (I would totally count Super Gals, though.)

I don't think Escaflowne is cheating for mecha.

I thought she meant because she used it before? Except that she didn't, so I don't think it's cheating, either.

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
re Emma: Honestly, I wouldn't call it that either. But SO MANY people did! >_>; It's crazy. It's around that time I started to notice how much stuff was being classed (even if only a secondary classification) as Slice of life.

(Hooray validation for Super Gals!) XD

I thought she meant because she used it before?

I took her to mean possibly both ways - that she used it before and that it's not something like Eva or Gundam and the like. And I don't think it's cheating either way at all. :) Personally, I don't think it's cheating to duplicate answers on a meme like this, just because there is BOUND to be some overlap.

No epic fight scenes = slice of life...?

I don't think it's cheating to duplicate answers on a meme like this, just because there is BOUND to be some overlap.

Well, I'm trying to avoid repeats on mine, too, so I can kinda understand. But, for instance, when one answer is "Osaka from Azumanga Daioh" and one answer is "Azumanga Daioh," I wouldn't really consider that a repeat.

Aha, you're right. I was thinking that I'd picked it before, but it's true, it was only a runner-up for favorite. (See how close it is to being my real favorite?)

I don't consider it to be cheating for mecha, because it totally is. I just found it fascinating how well the completely standard mecha plot was woven together with something that wasn't like mecha at all. (Though I gather that it's not actually the only show that has ever done this?)

I really don't know what slice of life is, that's my problem. Part of me thinks of it as "any anime that realistically evokes the details of ordinary life" (which is why almost all shoujo counts if it isn't set in a fantasy universe), but properly, I think it ought to be an anime whose only reason to exist is to do ordinary-life vignettes (i.e. not a romance, mystery, sci-fi story, etc). And not many things do that well.

how "slice of life" and "moe" are becoming nearly synonymous

OK, this does not even begin to compute. Someone must be using "moe" very differently than I do, because really, I don't think harem anime featuring tsundere meganekko are even remotely related to real life.

[identity profile] mangaroo.livejournal.com 2011-05-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love no mecha. I ignore mecha. If mecha are in a show I am watching, I certainly don't remember the mecha. Escaflowne had wings.

The current discussion re: what counts as a slice-of-life gives me a reasonable excuse not to identify one, yes? Otherwise, Azumanga Daioh is awesome indeed.

Not anime, but have you seen Iron Giant?

[identity profile] mangaroo.livejournal.com 2011-05-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't, because it has a big robot in it. The posters gave that away.

I'm butting in:

[identity profile] collarnojutsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-19 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
This will seem unrelated, but it's not: Do you watch Pixar movies?

I think you should watch the Iron Giant. It's a great movie. I might have even cried.

I do watch Pixar movies. Not all of them, but most. Why?

[identity profile] wednesday-10-00.livejournal.com 2011-05-19 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You should definitely watch it. It is really, really adorable and I'm pretty sure you'll like it. Last I checked it was available for streaming on Netflix.

Favorite slice of life: ...I don't think I've watched any. If I had to name something, I'd probably pick Marmalade Boy.

Favorite mecha: Robotech. I mean, Escaflowne is an awesome series, but at least in Robotech the main couples end up getting married.

Slice of life - Nodame Cantabile

Mecha - Eureka 7

(Robotech would have done a lot better in my book if it weren't for bloody Minmei ><)

Minmei was runner-up for most annoying character on my list. (Mokona is multi-dimensionally annoying...)

OH THANK YOU! I do not understand why all the boys love Minmei. Ugh.
