Never taunt the fear demon. It's tacky.

It seems I crowed over my good fortune too soon. Power went out late last night and has not returned. (At least I can still read manga in the daylight?)
On the upside, my neighborhood isn't too badly off. Streets are clear, most streetlights are working and (most importantly) my local Starbucks is open. I am caffeinated! Weather is lovely this morning.
Classes were supposed to start today, but they were canceled in anticipation of the storm.
Camping adventures will now commence. Where did I put that propane stove?
ETA: never have I been so grateful for power outlets and free wifi at Starbucks.

Date: 2011-08-29 08:44 pm (UTC)They say this storm was worse than Gloria for power loss across the state, even though Gloria was a stronger storm. Honestly it didn't seem like such a bad storm where I was, but obviously it hit pretty hard in terms of downed trees and flooding elsewhere across the state. The recovery period should be fun! (That is actually not totally ironic. The novelty hasn't worn off... yet.)
I assume classes will resume tomorrow (meaning my first classes will be Weds), but we'll see, I guess.

Have already finished one manga since last night! Only 1,058 to go.

Date: 2011-08-29 08:21 pm (UTC)I heard a report on the news (it was a total fluke that it was on, I never listen to news -- everyone knows that)... you know come to think of it, it may have been a commercial or PSA... anyway, the guy on whatever it was said that it will take a LONG time to get power back on for people. Of course, it will all vary but the damage is blah blah blah. Lots of man-power blah blah blah. Seems like they could hire some people to help through the crisis and kill two birds with one storm, so to speak.
Anyway, point being you can come here if you need to. You are always welcome. =(>.<)=
Starbucks must be thanking their lucky gods of fortune
Date: 2011-08-29 08:38 pm (UTC)It's always possible I might get lucky, but it wouldn't be at all surprising if I were among those who don't get power for a week or more, so I'm preparing for that. I have an outdoor grill. I have a propane stove & a propane lantern (which I can use on my outdoor porch). Hopefully my office at work will have power & internet soon. (It might already, but they told everyone to stay home today, so I haven't been in to check. Will probably try tomorrow.)
[Believe it or not, they are bringing in hundreds of crews from other states and it's STILL probably going to take over a week. The damage must be a lot worse in other parts of the state than it is here, since my immediate neighborhood doesn't look that bad at all.]

Date: 2011-08-30 01:06 am (UTC)Remind me to take you around my old hometown next time I visit CT. All will be clear then. ;) They'll be out a week at least, and they don't even have completely washed away roads like other towns do. Though from what I hear there was flooding there too, near my uncle's house on Rt 7. (I can't reach him because he has no cell and the whole town is without power. :/) I just talked to Mrs. R and she said that it took the neighbor 45 mins to drive the 7 miles to Bethel today. The roads are nearly impassable with debris! They were also "camping out" together tonight, dinner of melting ice cream and lobster tails from the freezer - ha ha! So I hope your Wilderness Porch adventures are fantastic indeed! (no sarcasm at all) XD
I had been reading about the bridges in NC before all of this; did you know that the one people were using to get off the OBX is (was?) rated a 2 (TWO) in safety - out of 100? I can't imagine it's better than a 1 at this point, hurrr! I am suddenly rethinking my non-fear of the island bridges now. Who knew? Gah!
Please friend me.

Date: 2011-09-03 02:02 pm (UTC)(And thank you for the kind thoughts. I'm adjusting, though there is still a hole there. I don't know how many times I've gone to step around the cat food dishes that are no longer in their corner of the kitchen.)
