White Belt

I started karate lessons today!
Well, to be more precise, I started last week, but the first few meetings were just one-on-one sessions to get accustomed to the basic moves. Tonight was my first proper adult beginners class, so I got my white belt (awarded symbolically after one's first class).
I've wanted to try martial arts for a while, but never had the nerve to do anything about it.
firesign10 and family have been going to this studio for a while (8-year-old son for a year now, parents for a few months) and just love it, so I decided to give it a try. The principal instructor, Mr. S, is really nice, and the class is full of friendly & encouraging people.
Still on my trial period for now, but thinking that I will definitely join, assuming I can keep up with the twice-a-week evening class schedule. I like the idea of having a set of goals to work toward to build my general fitness level.
Technically, it's not pure karate, but a mixed style (Shaolin Kenpo Karate) developed by Fred Villari. There are studios all over CT (maybe nationwide, I'm not sure?).
I have so many other things to post about... One Piece, more Nekota Yonezou, my wilderness adventures without power during the storm... but that'll do for now.

Date: 2011-09-08 02:43 am (UTC)spryambitious, I looked into Taekwondo a bit and had a very particular interest in Bo staff training. I could still call upon a few basics (poorly) if pressed - just don't tell my back - but I never really pursued it as much as I wanted. Maybe some day when I remember what life was like before Durham, my fighting spirit might return. ;)Anyway, good luck with it. I expect progress reports!! (I am so demanding, I know.)

Date: 2011-09-08 04:01 am (UTC)Sara - congrats on starting training! I'm glad f10 and her family inspired you to take action. It sounds like a fun way to improve physical fitness (though the white belt is the most stylish...are you sure you want to level up?).

Date: 2011-09-09 03:55 am (UTC)That is correct.
Are you still taking lessons?
I had to stop when I got the canine position because my schedule changes every four weeks.
Plus, I moved.
What belt are you?
I had just gotten the brown belt.
