Little Garden, continued. The best part of this is Zoro trying to cut off his own feet, and Sanji answering the telephone. (The battle with Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek? Not so much.)

Volume 14

118

Cover arc: I wonder what Rika is throwing a tantrum about? Coby and Helmeppo have already left to train with Garp, so she's not crying over them leaving. Were the other marines saying something mean about them? (LOL and aw at her - or her mother's - starry vision of "officers Coby and Helmeppo.")

Luffy knocks Dorry out, mostly to keep him from making his injuries worse by fighting.

Interesting how quickly Luffy arrives at the conclusion that there must be someone else on the island, simply because he knows without a doubt that neither Broggy nor his nakama could have planted the bomb.

In the jungle, Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine arrive for a visit with Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek in Mr 3's wax house.

Mr. 3 points out that the bounty on Dorry and Broggy's heads (100 million apiece) is still active, although it's over a hundred years old.

"Blue Demon" Dorry and "Red Demon" Broggy were once the strongest members of a pirate crew made up entirely of giants.

It was Mr. 3 who ordered Mr. 5 to plant the explosives in the sake, to weaken the giants enough so that they could capture them.

When the signal for battle sounds, a severely injured Dorry insists on going out to fight Broggy.

119

Aw, Usopp calls Broggy "shishou" ("Master").

Dorry pins Luffy under a mass of rock to stop him from interfering with his fight (and apologizes for doubting the Strawhats).

Luffy: "Are you gonna die just because a god tells you to!?" Dorry says Luffy wouldn't understand the "lofty words" (takaki kotoba) of Elbaf.

I can't help feeling that almost all of the conversations with Dorry and Broggy have a secondary meaning that we haven't seen revealed yet, particularly where the traditions of Elbaf are concerned.

T_T the conversation between Dorry and Broggy before they fight. (Broggy good-naturedly joking -- "Wasn't that some fine sake?" and Dorry replying "Indeed, it had the flavor of the gods.")

Vivi still thinks of Luffy as a villain with a huge bounty, and is astonished by his concern for Dorry (compare Nami's bewilderment when dealing with Luffy early on).

Mr. 3 has pictures of Luffy, Zoro, Nami and Vivi (but not Usopp or Sanji).

Zoro: "Go left at the tree with the vines", LOL. (Needless to say, all the trees have vines.)

Zoro and Nami mysteriously disappear.

Vivi points out that the agents of Baroque Works might already have followed them to the island, and that they might have ignored Usopp because he wasn't on their list.

120

Broggy deals the fatal blow to Dorry.

Broggy weeps over his victory, and Mr. 3 thinks his tears are tears of joy (they're not).

Mr. 3 claims to be a sculptor, and introduces Miss Goldenweek as a painter.

Broggy's feet are trapped in wax.

Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine appear before Luffy, Vivi and Usopp, with Karoo as hostage. (They tortured Karoo because he wouldn't call out to Vivi to lure her into a trap. T_T)

Usopp and Vivi attack and are easily defeated (Luffy is still pinned down).

When Mr. 5 mentions Mr. 3, Vivi recognizes him as the agent who ate the "wax-wax fruit" (he has the power to generate wax from any part of his body).

Mr. 3 tells Broggy he's "creating a work of art."

121

Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine take Vivi hostage, leaving Luffy, Usopp and Karoo for dead.

Mr. 3 mocks Broggy with the fact that his "honorable" victory was compromised.

Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine rejoin Mr. 3 with Vivi as their captive.

Broggy is shocked to learn from Vivi that the sake he gave Dorry had a bomb in it.

Zoro, Nami and Vivi are to become ornaments (living wax statues) on Mr. 3's giant wax sculpture, like candles on a birthday cake.

(Zoro's knowing smirk when Mr. 5 says he "took care" of Luffy is awesome. He knows Luffy will show up before long.)

Zoro seems remarkably unfazed by his first glimpse of the giants. ("Oh hey, a really big person.")

Broggy admits that he knew something was wrong with Dorry, but he couldn't insult his friend's warrior spirit by refusing to fight when Dorry was willing to put his own life on the line.

Luffy, Usopp and Karoo, injured but alive, swear they'll get their revenge.

122

When Broggy tries to break free of the wax, Mr. 3 stabs wax swords through his hands and feet to keep him pinned down (*shudder*).

Zoro threatening to cut off his own legs. <3 So ridiculous. So Zoro.

Aw, Broggy and Zoro bonding in their insane macho determination to risk it all.

(What I love best about this is that Zoro doesn't just threaten to do it, he actually tries to pull it off -- to the point where ever afterwards, he has scars on both ankles, lol and owww.)

Vivi flashing back on Igaram asking her if she has the will NOT to die (this is explained later).

Luffy, Usopp and Karoo come charging to the rescue.

LOL Zoro: "Nah, we're fine." (With blood streaming down his half-severed legs.)

123

Zoro striking a pose. <3 <3 <3 (And then him & Nami fighting about who's stupider, while Vivi is all "....")

Mr. 3 prepares to fight Luffy, leaving Usopp and Karoo to Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine. (Mr. 3: "You clean up that garbage behind him.")

Luffy knocks out the main stem on the wax sculpture, but it only has the effect of speeding up the wax-statue-formation process.

LOL, Vivi freaking out at Luffy's idiocy. "Are you REALLY OK with entrusting your life to that guy? Mr. Bushido!"

"Good thing I struck a pose." LOL FOREVER

Luffy takes out Mr. 3, only to fall prey to the hypnotic powers of Miss Goldenweek's "Colors Trap."

124

Luffy is helpless against Miss Goldenweek's traps (resistance to hypnosis is not his strong point).

Nami: "NOW what are we going to do?" Zoro: "Too bad. Shoulda struck a pose while you still had the chance."

Usopp, battling against Mr. 5, manages to save Luffy by knocking the shirt right off his back (and Miss Goldenweek's Colors Trap design with it).

125

Sanji is tired of waiting around at the Merry (having returned with the meat from his dinosaur hunt), so he goes looking for the others and stumbles across Mr. 3's wax hideout in the jungle.

Mr. 3 returns to fight Luffy in full-body candle-wax armor.

Usopp is the one who figures out that wax should be vulnerable to heat.

Between the three of them, Luffy, Usopp and Karoo are able to melt the wax off the candle-sculpture and the wax of Mr. 3's armor.

126

The Jango cover arc (Jango's Dance Paradise): totally my favorite cover arc ever. (Except maybe "From the Decks of the World," OMG the awesome.)

Vivi and Nami (freed from the wax) take out Miss Valentine. Usopp takes out Mr. 5 with his Tabasco Star (hee!).

Zoro finishes Mr. 5 off with his flaming swords (yaki-onigiri -- damn, now I'm hungry.)

Luffy, chasing after Mr. 3, is momentarily stumped by his "hall of mirrors."

Luffy effortlessly (?) selects the correct target by "instinct."

Observation haki, more likely. He just doesn't know he has it yet.

I want Sanji answering the den-den mushi on my answering machine. "Shitty restaurant, at your service. May I take your order?" (That's probably how he used to answer the phone at the Baratie, hee.)

The voice on the other end of the line: Mr. 0 (seen only in shadow profile).

Ahahaha, I love this whole VOLUME. I don't even have to reread it it is so vivid in my mind. I just, the fact that Zoro is like, oh well I'm gonna die BETTER STRIKE A COOL POSE. Oh Zoro <3333. and that it is an actual thing with him. Ugh Zoro, you are so fabulous.

I just love how Oda effortlessly weaves hilarity (Zoro :D) with D:-Moments (Broggy's hand getting speared, them slowly being waxed to death etc).

Also I am always amazed that not that much has happened yet, story wise, and we're already volume 14. In a lesser manga, this would make me doubt the storytelling abilities of the mangaka, but with OP it mostly makes me go ODA TELL ME MORE. MORE!

So true! The anime often feels unnecessarily dragged, but the manga, never.

and that it is an actual thing with him.

OMG, it never occurred to me to connect this scene with Thriller Bark, but I see what you mean. Oh, Zoro. T_T

Yes! The first One Piece volume I ever bought, just because I was so happy that Usopp was essential in saving the day. Which is still the best part of the volume in my opinion. ^_^ (Second best would be Zoro's posing and telling Nami and Vivi they should have struck a pose when they had the chance. Third best is Sanji and the dendenmushi call.)

Re-reading this I sometimes get surprised at how nasty Mr 3 is. He claims to have turned people into "artistic" wax statues before, doesn't he? And yet I too was genuinely happy to see him in Impel Down and cheered for him when he stepped up to do his bit there and at Marineford. I guess the severity of the prison plus remembering the shitty way Crocodile had treated him both helped.

On the cover pic: the Swedish caption is something like "You'll soon get to see them again". So I took it that for some reason Rika thought they'd be back much sooner from the training. (Though I'm honestly not sure why Rika would want to see Helmeppo.) Maybe the Swedish translator was talking through his hat, which has certainly been known to happen.

Usopp, yay!

I agree, Mr. 3 is super creepy and sadistic in this arc.

He's portrayed in a much more comic vein in Impel Down, which is why I enjoyed him so much in that arc. Honestly, I think Buggy kind of has a good influence on the idiots who team up with him. Alvida was a lot less annoying after she hooked up with Buggy, as well. (I love that last we saw, Mr. 3 still seemed to be hanging around Buggy -- though they've probably parted ways since. Can't wait to see Buggy again.)

The Japanese on the Rika cover pick is ちょっとお別れ ("A Brief Separation") - I see where the Swedish translator was going with his translation, though it's a bit different.

It's possible that she originally thought they would be back sooner, but that doesn't really explain why she's beating down on that poor Marine while the others are laughing.

We did see Rika hanging out with both Coby and Helmeppo when they were still training at the local base (having picnics, etc) -- though I am certain Helmeppo was not the favorite, heh.

Great point
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<lj-spoiler [...] really">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

Great point <lj-spoiler text="Impel Down" though no longer really">about Buggy! I've always found it weird how his crew seems so devoted to him despite the fact that he executes his crewmates when he thinks they're making fun of his nose, but perhaps that's another aspect of that odd charisma of his.</lj-spoiler>

We did see Rika hanging out with both Coby and Helmeppo when they were still training at the local base (having picnics, etc) -- though I am certain Helmeppo was not the favorite, heh.
I'd forgotten about that pic! Well, then she might have warmed up to him a little.

And Rika being mad at one particular Marine... it fits with other themes if it was because he was making fun of Coby and Helmeppo. But it does seem needlessly cryptic. Maybe Oda had intended to make it clearer through the caption but goofed for once.

I actually kind of like the Miss Goldenweek fight, just because Luffy's reactions are so hilarious (and then when he's drinking the tea and crying because he wants to help his nakama so bad, awww). But the highlight of this volume is definitely Zoro. And Vivi's reactions to the rest of the Strawhats, haha.

"Good thing I struck a pose." LOL FOREVER + Nami: "NOW what are we going to do?" Zoro: "Too bad. Shoulda struck a pose while you still had the chance."

I don't really have anything more to add. I just love this gag that much. XD

Surprisingly, I don't have a lot to say about this volume. My reactions were mostly sadness for Dorry, joy in Zoro's pose (less joy in his leg-hacking) and Karoo's quacks, and the realization that every new ally has to go through the process in which they discover that Luffy is secretly awesome under his thick, bouncy layer of bouncy thickness.

I read shounen manga badly. I seriously missed Dorry pinning Luffy under one of the cave-house things and was wondering how he got there.

While I think fighting for 100 years after you have apparently forgotten the reason you're fighting is stupid, I do respond to the nobility of fighting even though you are incapacitated. (Hey, I crushed on Zoro for fighting Arlong's goons even though he was still Mihawked. Does Zoro ever get a chance to heal?)

I was so sad about Dorry and so angry with you and weekday for telling me no one died in the present. Then I started vol.15. Glad I did so before commenting here, because I was aaaaaaaangry that you had overlooked Dorry's death. Oh, I love the giant hug in volume 15. Yay for you, Broggy.

Thank heavens Luffy is here to point out the obvious about everybody's hair.

So much hilarity when Luffy is hypnotized into taking tea. I kind of regret that Oda decided he was stressing and fighting the relaxation, because I loved the image of him calmly sitting there and following proper tea etiquette: "The tea is good."

Good for Usopp, tricking 5 into swallowing the not-bomb. Oh, and also figuring out that wax melts. Geez, did we HAVE to burn off Nami's top? Am dreading Sanji rejoining the group before her wardrobe recovers.

The point about Luffy's instinct goes by so quickly. Narratively, I feel kind of let down. I think it should have had the same impact as that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indy, faced with the super-skilled swordsman and the implied lengthy battle, just pulls out his gun and shoots him.

Back to reading shounen manga badly: it's not clear to me if/how Karoo got Miss Golden Week in the end. I suppose I'll get that answer in volume 15.

Random note about Sanji that's a little more suitable for volume 15, but kind of has nothing to do with anything One Piece, so I'll put it here: his expressions and posture really remind me of a particular Yoneda Kou character type. I'm kind of surprised Yoneda/RAW didn't do Zoro x Sanji doujinshi. But right now -- in volume 15 -- whenever I look at Sanji, I'm seeing the uke from Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai.

Mostly, I really valued this volume for its comedy rather than its action. Zoro's pose. Zoro's legs. Luffy's tea. Karooooo!

I was so sad about Dorry and so angry with you and weekday for telling me no one died in the present.

Now you're starting to get it. ^_~

Since you already know the trope, it's not a spoiler to say that Baroque Works (and particularly Alabasta) is where the no-one-dies-in-the-present fan credo really got its start. I cried for character after character who turned out to be alive three chapters later. In fact, I think it was when I was rejoicing over *spoiler* not being dead a little further on that [livejournal.com profile] gnine (who was visiting and marathoning Alabasta with me) taught me the Law of Death in One Piece (only she left out the BIG NASTY EXCEPTION, the wretch).

I was SO sad when Dorry "died" (I totally bought it) and so happy when he turned out to be alive again. Giant love!

Does Zoro ever get a chance to heal?

LOL, oh, poor Zoro. Sadly, I can think of worse examples from later in the series. But I kind of think he wouldn't want it any other way. (This is a bit later on, but in volume -- 16, I think? -- he's finally recovered from the wounds on his legs, and he's really happy that he can train properly again, so he decides to go for a midwinter swim and nearly freezes to death. Oh, Zoro.)

Geez, did we HAVE to burn off Nami's top?

You know, I'm glad you pointed that out, because Sanji reaction aside, that does explain why Nami is running around in a bikini for a while... which turns out to be a plot point. I think I vaguely just thought she got hot and stripped down to the minimum.

The point about Luffy's instinct goes by so quickly.

This is under the spoiler cut in the post, but I now think there might be more going on there than we initially realize. But you'll get there in time. ^_^ (LOL Raiders of the Lost Ark, still one of the best scenes ever.)

I read shounen manga badly.

Enormous sympathy. I often find myself staring at panels, thinking "who just did what to whom"? Although in general I prefer reading the manga to watching the anime for many reasons, the fight and action sequences make far more sense in the anime. (On the downside, they're usually dragged out three times as long, sigh.)

Mostly, I really valued this volume for its comedy rather than its action.

Yes!

I'm relieved to hear the point is plot and not cleavage.

Yeah, as I was reading it, I thought Zoro's flaming swords would probably make more of an impact had they been animated. And that's just a scene I was able to understand in manga format. It's like I need all manga action explained in narration. ("Observe the giant placing a house on Luffy." "Observe the quacking spotbill running away faster than Usopp can catch up to ride him.")

Well, at least in this case it ostensibly is.

Sad to say, for all his many excellent virtues, Oda does not seem to be immune to the boob obsession which afflicts male mangaka. *sigh* (Have you SEEN any of the New World character designs?)
